How Do You Defend The Ball Online?

Mar-25-2022

One question, what is the key to playing a good defense online? It feels like a completely different game than offline - like you're sliding towards the court with the momentum of each change of direction. I put a lot of time into every game. I'm trying to have more subtle control over the left stick action, keep the right stick up, and do more prediction/"hit a guy on the spot" than reaction. Still, the results were terrible.

I don't want to run off the ball like I am, is there something missing, control, or is that all?

Technically, don't let your right stick go up, as that will limit your lateral movement, so people will just blow past you. Instead, use the left trigger to defend and stay away from the ball handler. Most players do the same thing all the time, so pay attention to what they're doing and get used to it, cutting to the rim if they're cutting. If they are three hunters get their faces.

The key here is to not just focus on the presence or absence of the ball. Use both. If you are defending the ball and your opponent puts you out of position, switch to another player to close the fairway while your player recovers. When I guard P&R, I usually control the rushing defender. That way, if they're 3, I can step up, or if they're running at the rim, I can step back.

Sometimes I'm off the ball long enough for them to see me move the player I'm controlling and think I'm switching to having the ball before I'm off the ball. When they think you don't have the ball, they usually try to get the 3-pointer back, which is easy to hit with the ball. So I tricked them into thinking I was playing, which caused them to throw bad shots.

As a person, you don't sit down and play every game because you still need to know the whole court. Most people only have 2-3 moves in their arsenal (if any) and they use it to move in any direction they see a bit of space. The key is to know the direction and cut it off before they go. Not hard to predict, tbh. The biggest challenge (on ps4) is that, despite the right decisions, it's actually easier to blow away than ps5.

Pure possession is not to overuse it. Don't jump up and shoot, don't bet on steals, and don't over-commit unless you know there's a helpful guard waiting for you. If the middle of the floor is 0 and the far left and far right are -50 and 50, you don't want to go beyond -30 and 30, you will be crossed. If someone creates a dribble like Magic and Harden, you need to predict where they're going and stand there. Also, watch out for 3-pointers.
